A Review of Star Trek (2009)

star_trek_movie_poster_imaxIn my family Star Trek has been a tradition as long as I can remember. I’ve seen all the movies in theaters with my mom and brother since the Voyage home in 1986. I’ve read the James Blish Novelizations of the Original Series and Watched most of the episodes. I’ve seen every episode of TNG, DS9, and Voyager. I did miss season 3 but that will be rectified someday.

I went through 3 major phases as a kid, Dinosaurs, Star Trek, and Robots. I might have moved on from pure and total obsession but boy do I still love the universe. It might be because I have so many great memories of watching TNG with my family all comfy on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn or it could be the hopeful vision of the future either way I love Star Trek.

Sadly my Mom couldn’t be with us last Thursday when we went to see Star Trek but she was with us in heart. I know she would have loved it. I did however bring my Fiancée who had never seen anything but the Trouble with Tribbles. She loved it and I think she’ll be into watching the new Blu-ray release with me. We went back on Sunday and here’s my review.

Short Version: Amazing it was truly a good Star Trek movie.   Longer version after the cut.

*Warning Mild Spoilers*

Star Trek doesn’t have a lack of Alternate reality and time travel stories. They’ve always been my favorite when done well. This one was very well done.

The story overall was very Trek, it had a few moments where you had to consciously suspend your belief (Red Matter? No defenses? Sky Diving from space into the atmosphere with no propulsion?) It was not perfect in it’s depiction of space and seemed to forget about shields completely.

It was however very respectful of the material and the feeling of Star Trek. I wasn’t treated to “J.J.” in Space. For a perfect description of how it felt see the PVP blog. Mr Straus said it perfectly. “…this is most definitely [our parent’s]’s Star Trek.”

It’s fast, if you don’t pay attention you’ll be wondering what just happened. There are a few breathing moments where they technobabble a little to make sure you’re following but that’s always followed by some kind of action.

Other then a few extra’s the acting is perfect. I’m not adding anything by saying that the actors played the characters perfectly without imitating the previous actors.

There are plenty of nods to the original series and every actor seemed to take his role as seriously as needed. Quinto was a perfect Spock and watching him and Nemoy almost made me think they were uhmm… each other.

Every member of the crew was shown at least once to be awesome at what they do and that really makes you care for them even if you hadn’t known them before.

As mentioned on the PVP blog, the interaction between the actors was perfect. You really felt like they were friends.

Production Value
The special effects were beautiful, what I could see of them anyways. There was more shaky camera in this then in a student film. I realize that it is the standard since the annoying Bourne sequels but it was a little much. I very much enjoyed the hand held camera during intense dialogue it adds a certain reality to it and I don’t mind the same effect applied to ships, the way it is in Firefly and Serenity but darn it I like to see Kirk get his ass handed to him. I also like to see who’s firing on whom.

Other then that I like the updates to the engine room and the updates to the overall look of the ships and uniforms.

It was a beautiful movie.

If it doesn’t break the 200 million dollar mark in the US I’ll be surprised and I honestly can’t wait to go see the sequels. I hope, someday, to bring my kids to see Star Trek in movie theatres and continue the tradition.

If you liked Star Trek, didn’t like Star Trek, like action movies, or want a good show. Go see it you’ll like it. I’ve been bugging my Fiancée to watch star trek for the past 3 years and after this movie she’s not fighting it anymore.

I give Star Trek 9.5 on 10.

Oh come on! It’s not like you pushed super hard or anything! And I watched that one episode with no complaints!

Great review! I agree with everything you said. 😀
